There are a number of third party dock fixing applications available
but not coming to mind right now. Might google dock or dock
applications , or look at versiontracker and find soemthing before I
remember specifics. One I've seen makes the dock background invisible,
others will give you an Appel emnu up in the corner where i t's 'sposed
to be, and various others...

Oops - sorry for the blank reply, I was testing the key combo and
tried the wrong one!
Do command-option-D and it will autohide - just pop up when you move
the cursor off the side of your screen that it was on. Is that what
you want? (Dock->turn hiding on in the apple menu will do the same.)
