Lou:

You make a good point for the need to repair disk permissions even when not installing software, which I neglected to mention. For some reason, that I have not seen explained in these e-lists and that seems to be a mystery to the technical experts outside Apple, the business of the Mac OS or UNIX keeping track of the software files and folders spontaneously goes awry. So one needs to repair disk permissions periodically.

So, why does repair permissions cure a slowed down OSX mac? Every once=20=

in a while, without new installations, it starts taking longer and=20
longer for windows to open and thing to get done, and fixing=20
permissions restores it to snappiness. This is with both of my iBooks,=20=

2001 600 G3 and 2005 933 G4.

I do use cron apps so they do the same thing just as well, along with=20
other maintennance tasks they left out of X....

The Disk Utility Repair Disk Permissions process has nothing to do=20

user, control access to your files via the Get Info.

But Repair Disk Permissions has all to do with software on the Mac. =20=

It has all to do with the operating system, the updates from Apple,=20
the applications from Apple, and third party applications. The main=20=

benefit from repairing disk permissions is to straighten out the=20
damage that can occur through installation of some third party=20

and whereabouts of software files and folder, not the user's files and=20=

folders.=
