I wasn't trying to use it as a router, simply to connect it to the
Airport extreme base station so the iMac can be wireless again (the
airport card it previously had won't work anymore).
The iMac sees something plugged in to the ethernet port, but I don't
know what else to do to get this iMac wireless.

A bridge is not actually a router, it just creates a connection to
another
network on a different subnet. This may be part of the issue.
