The 500 MHz should just work with 10.4 out of the box.

Regardless, you don't actually need XPF for any iMac per se. All of them
can run 10.4 out of the box, just any that don't have built in firewire
the OS X installer will reject the machine and refuse to install on it.

If you have a qualifying machine available, you can do the install on it,
and then swap the hard drive into the non qualifying iMac. I've done this
to get a 233 running 10.4 (I used an external firewire case to install
onto the hard drive, and then stuck that drive into the 233 and it booted
just fine.)
