OS?  Screen saver and sleep settings?   To tell what's happening,,,

My instinct is to say it's probably just the built-in screen saver 
spazzing out.  I've seen it happen a number of times.  I've got it 
set to randomly slide show from a folder... Now and then it just goes 
nutz trying to change the pictures as fast as it can.  It ends up 
flashing about the way you describe...

If that's the case, try changing the settings a bit...
