Tried them.  They're all off.

Recommend specific ones that don't.  We've tried the $4 ones and the $16 ones.

That's true.  But the incandescents keep up with the regulated 60-hz 
a/c power, so I don't see them flicker.  CF's don't come close.

Define cheap.   I've got six sitting here right now - dead.  We paid 
$12 to $16 each for them.  They were so-called extra long life ones.

We're fairly active people.  We don't sit around for hours and hours 
in one room.

ALL CF lights take minutes to brighten up in cold weather.  ALL.
