it's not bad at all. I would prefer to have an internal drive to make sure I
have guaranteed speed on the system's boot, but If you really need to use an
external drive after all else fails including the IDE controllers
themselves, then okay.

The only downside is though if you use an internal drive, there is a
specific machine drive size limit. As for external drives, they can be as
big as they make them in terms of storage capacity.
