Shine a flashlight on the screen at an angle, if you can see your desktop then 
the problem is the backlight or inverter.
 
If you still see nothing, then both the backlight and the video are kaput.
 
Can you connect an external monitor and get anything? if not the issue is the 
onboard video, which means logic board replacement.

The only external monitor would be an iMac G3 233...
Is it possible to match the inside video connector of a G3 iMac to the one in 
the G5 iMac?
