This happens with at least
Python 2.4 (LInux) PIL 1.1.6
Python 2.6 (Mac OS X 10.5.+), PIL 1.1.6
Release notes for 1.1.7 suggest something like this might have been
fixed in 1.1.6b1 but no clear indication in 1.1.7.
