I once set up something like this. There was a secure Intranet, and you would log on
(with SSL) using basic authentication (the pop-up username/password box). In order to
log on to IMail transparently, I wrote an ASP page that would get the
username/password, connect to IMail web messaging (using a component called ASPHTTP),
send the username/password, and return the page to the user. It's a bit tricky to get
set up, but can be done.
