Hi Len,

Thanks for the reply ... I see you sleep about as much as I do ... what
about 30 minutes a nite :~) [from your typically immediate and knowledgable
replies to both HKSI & imail lists].

I am speaking of the iMail discussion lists. I am sure that there are
probably larger lists that 8,000, we just don't presently have any users in
that range on the NT side. We do have many users with much more on our UNIX
side, but the NT [so far] has been fairly lite.

Typical total messaging on the box is about 3000 - 4000 messages a day, but
that does not include the days when we seem to be getting whacked with spam
or relay. I have quite a few higher days that are hovering in the 20,000 -
25,000 total messages. We are actively working to kill the spammer/relayer.
BTW .. thx for the insight on imgate. I think that is the way we will be
heading .. I am making that part of the migration plan to a mail server
separate from the web server.

As far as the heavy usage with webmail and my use of this list, I am a "true
believer" in Ron's products and am using the templates on our mail server. I
find that there is plenty of valuable information and knowledge with the
users here and tend to dump the imail list mail into an account that I scan
through every week or so.

I guess it will be a "wait and see" and a fair amount of monitoring.

thx,

discussion or announcement list?

I'm sure there are larger lists than that.

It could run ok, could run not so ok. The pb's will be in the list
maintenance (subscribe/unsubscribe and bounce) plus the Imail list
server can be unaggressive in delivering list traffic although 6.06
is supposed to have made some improvement in the SMTP client area
(the process that sends mail). So if the lists are discussion lists,
the turnaround time can be variable to long. Throw in your
spam/relay pb's, and you could have fun.

That's certainly plenty of box for a mail server. Since you are on
this list, I assume your users are (heavy) users of web mail.

If the 8K list is a discussion list, then just 10 or 20 list msgs/day
will generate 80K or 160K messages. Do you have any idea of what
your traffic is now?

I suggest you try it and see how it goes. But everybody knows
Imail's list server is very basic, so be ready to seek relief
quickly. Msg deliveries can be offloaded to IMGate, which will also
fix your relay/spam pb's. Then if list maintenance/stability is a
pb, then I'd recommend using a real list server such as Listar +
postfix on FreeBSD on a separate machine of not necessarily such
power. The software is free but magnitudes better than Imail list
server. I have client running announcement lists of 20k members and
getting 40K msg deliveries/hour. Many people run list of 70K and
above on Listar.
