Bob:
Once we got everything to 2000 Advance Server and SQL 2000 the network
has been happy. None of our boxes liked the mixed mode environment, so
we gave into MS and upgraded everything.
Good Luck...

Yep -- 7.0. Since I'm on NT4 and SQL 2K is dog slow on NT (OH! I'm not
supposed to know that!), I'm running 7.0. Except for the fun and games
this week, I've been REALLY happy with 7.0's performance. I saw that
note, but thought -- Hey, I'm not running clustered, so no problem. Oh
well.
Thanks.

Bob:
I reviewed the MS UDA website and it seems that MDAC 2.6 is for SQL 2000
only. 7 and 6.5 are not supported yet (they say in cluster mode, but I
bet in any mode). Are you running one of those versions?
Thanks...

Hmmm. I just re-read Ian's statement about MDAC 2.6 and have to send
this warning.
We just updated our Web server software (WebSite) and add Chilisoft to a
couple of the systems for ASP support. In the process, Chilisoft
complained that I wasn't on the latest MDAC and suggested 2.5. Being
the good "do bee", I went to MS and got the LATEST -- 2.6 sp1 -- and
promptly installed it. That was last Sunday and all seemed well. Same
on Monday. Same on Tuesday. I'm in the States, so I wasn't here on
Wednesday (4th of July -- holiday), but everything seemed okay. When I
got in on Thursday, it was off to you know where in a hand basket. SQL
Server was crawling (using 500M of RAM and climbing -- usual is less
than 200M). Web sites that needed access where timing out. Customers
were not happy campers. SQL was giving me all sorts of weird errors --
Enterprise Manager would disconnect from the server, log files were
locked and not accessible meaning no changes to the databases. I
rummaged around the KB at MS and found some obscure comment that 2.6
might throw these errors in "limited situations." The fix was to open a
support incident with them (pay bucks and maybe you'll get a credit) or
downgrade to 2.5. I downloaded 2.5 sp2 and installed it on the servers
-- now all is well.
I'm running NT4 sp6a, so perhaps 2.6 sp1 is for W2K only???? I know
that the above is with a Web server and not iMAIL, but thought I'd let
you know my experience.
Oh, and if someone can tell me what happened, I'd appreciated it
(smile).

Ian,
JET and MDAC can be found at http://www.microsoft.com/data. Sorry I
didn't post that before. But it may be a legit Imail bug. I'll check
into it.

This is good news - and externalizer will help me with 75+ domains too
(I am sure).
Forever in the past however I was never able to get iMail to work with
an external database - it would never create a table (and people kept
saying it should). Even when creating a new domain from scratch. After
getting a domain connected to a data source it would stop working 'some
time later'. And adding users would 'just fail'.
Anyone have any tricks - and 7.02 does it have improvements in the
external database connection? If I can get one stable domain I can then
push all the others over with externalizer - right?
Ian

Lee:
We have over 130 domains setup currently on Imail. I used Ron's applet
and found it extremely simple to use. We were able the migrate
everything over an MS SQL 2000 Exterprise server within a matter of
minutes without any errors. The readme file of the app does need updated
to reflect changes made on application itself. It was well worth the
price for the applet.
We had everything switched over, the reg cleaned, and the systems back
online within about 15 minutes.
It really was pretty simple.
Always...
