Subject: Re: [imail] moving imail 6.x to new server

there is a KB article in ipswitch.com site, but I couldn't find it

my 2 cents. basically here are some steps I suggest:

Please read all before doing anything. Also, keep in mind that I don't
deeply understand your MX configurations and setting for your domains, and
where your new server is going to be located -in a new LAN or in the same
one you are using. If you have doubts, or want more info, please email me
directly. I hope the following lines give you the info you need.

-I have move my IMAIL several times during the last 6 months-

If you are moving to a new location were you need to use different IP
address it will take longer. If you are using same IP addresses you won't be
spending a lot of time in the moving
.

1. connect via ftp the two servers.

2. copy the Imail directory (if that is the one you are using), from the old
server to the new one. I assume accounts directories are under imail.

3. Install Imail in the new server. keep the 2 servers running. The old one
will be still active until all your tests indicate that new server is ready
and running well.

the installation will overwrite files you had in the old one.. apply all the
hot fixes.

4. backup your regedit imail configuration. But just the info under domains
You can also back up the IMail Server registry settings by using Regedit to
save the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Ipswitch\IMail\Domains\. This saves
all user settings.

save the key

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Ipswitch
       \IMail\Domains\domain_name\
5. Move the regedit backup file you created in step 4 to the new server
6. Open the regedit in the new server and import the backup file you created
in step 4.
Remembers to backup all your regedit (in the new server) before importing
anything.
The reason you are importing only the key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Ipswitch
\IMail\Domains\domain_name\ is because if you backup of the
imail system settings you would be restoring or importing internal server
IMAIL configuration that will end up giviing you
conflicts. For example if your new server has a different IP address or
different DSN -in your network card- you would overwrite the correct
information with bad information at the time you import
your imail settings using the backup for the imail registry. That is why you
only have to backup the key pointing to the imail domains.
7. Open your regedit (the one in the new server). under the imail domains
key change the IP address of the domains using IP addresses
to the appropiate or correct IP address you will be using. If you have
different IP address, I suggest you review key by key of the regedit -of
course under the Imail\ key to make sure there is not information related to
old IP address -the ones used in the old server-

8. Make sure that under Imail\Global there is a string value called
NameServer metioning IP Address.
Those IP addreses should be the ones your DNS Network Card configuration
has. If not, correct them and type the numbers that your network card
has -in the new server-.
this is necessary for Imail to recognize where destination domains are.
-if you have doubts about what I am saying here, please email me directly-
9. your imail should be ready now...but before anything else I suggest to do
some testings.
10. see if webmail is working -remebers to turn on the service-.
send emails from there.
11. if you can use a test domain to see if Imail is working please do so.
that means, change the MX to the appropiate domain name pointing to your new
server and see if you are able to receive email in the
new server

Note: Since you say you have 150+accounts.. plus fixed Ips and virtual
accounts..I assume you mean domains.... not accounts..., make sure you You
will have to change your mx info if you are using a different IP.You could
also use in your new server the same domain name of your old server -make
sure they are not in the same network because you will find a conflict-If
everything runs OK, then your installation was perfect. Now let's move to
the real thing.Moving the server for real. You will have to find some low
traffic time to do so.Stop your Imail service in the old server. FTP
transfer only your domains subfolders under your imail directory. That would
transfer, all the information being hold by the usernames of your domains.
don't transfer any other folder or information. Just domains folders.Change
your MX, pop, mail, etc. Cnames or A records related to Imail. If you have a
secondary Imail server acting as your secundary MX, then that server will
hold all incoming imail..if not incoming email will bounced back, depending
on the email server that sends it.Make sure your new Imail server is on an
working.... keep off the imail in the old server.Everything should work now
in your new server.good luckLuis
