How does the server or the client (not sure which - maybe they work
together) determine if a message has been read or is still unread? One thing
that has always made me curious about netscape (and other clients) is that
if you specify that email messages should be left on the server, you can
download and read them and it never downloads those particular messages from
that machine again. Sometime later if you specify that messages should now
be removed from the server, new messages are downloaded and deleted. The
messages previously left on the server are still there and will remain
there.

I was just wondering how this behavior is achieved. Is there some RFC that
calls for this behavior? Is this behavoir intentional?
