Yes. I do see problems moving or deleting messages using the web
interface. They are the same problems that we see using IMAP clients. The
action of moving and deleting messages also tachs out the processor on the
Mail server while this is occurring. I believe 100% that this is what
people on this list are complaining about. This is a real issue on the
IMAIL server.
We have tested this with many different clients and definitely see a
pattern. Even when using the standard (unaltered) Ipswitch Web Interface we
can delete or move files and tach out the server processor every time. To
qualify that statement I should say that we allow internal users to keep big
amounts of mail on the server. We have one guy who has a 160 MB sent
folder. I think that when the program opens that one ASCII file (*.mbx) to
remove the message or to move it, which also removes it from one location,
that a different method is being used than is relied upon to write (append)
new messages to the end of that file. This is an unqualified guess, but we
can definitely see a time correlation between the size of the mailbox file
and the time the processor tachs out during an IMAP move. I think that some
poor folks around here may be rebooting their servers during the middle of
one of these events unaware that the server will recover in time when it
completes the task.
The question is... Is Ipswitch aware of this? Is something being done?
I have seen this topic come up a lot here and I have never seen a response
form the support gurus on this. The IMAIL product is good and solid, this
condition is not a crash, but rather a race condition that occurs (IMHO)
when large folders (*.mbx files) are being manipulated to remove contents.
The server always recovers from this condition here when all moves and
deletes are done. This does however need to be fixed. It is not a client
issue unless it is all clients + Ipswitch Web Client.
Anyway Bruce, sorry for the long late answer, but yes I have seen this
too. I have studied it and am sure it is a server issue. It is not fatal
to the server, but does slow everything on the whole box down (bad) until it
is done. I have seen this since I started using the product. Tried clean
builds on Dell and other servers and on Clones to see if we could duplicate
and we did, every time. The problem is related to the size of the mail file
being manipulated.
If you (whoever you are reading this) think that this is not affecting you
than please watch you processor while you do this to verify and let me know
what you find. If you have dealt with this and resolved it. please let me
know how.
Big TIA,
-V
