Sounds like a good setup - keep the narrow devices away from the wide.
Also, with the three channel card, put one drive on each channel. I don't
know if the Adaptec manual addresses it, but we use a lot of Mylex cards and
they suggest spreading drives across channels for mzx performance.
Also be aware of your writing policy to the RAID - write-back or
write-through. Again, unsure if the Adaptec lets you control it, but the
difference is write-through uses the cache only for reads, write-back uses
it for reads and writes. If you use write-back and have a power failure,
you can lose data, but it is faster.
My only suggestion for partition size is to be sure you need that much. If
you make a 2-4GB NT partition and put the rest to data, you'll wind up with
about 14GB for mail. I have about 14,000 users and my total mail in storage
is about 6GB at any given time. That will give you LOTS of growth room. I
always suggest keeping data and NT separate so you can do a format and
reinstall when necessary without worrying about data loss.

Hello all,
Im just about to build a new Web & Mail server, spec:
Dual Pentium III 500
Motherboard with O/B SCSI
384MB RAM
3 x 9GB 10k RPM SCSI drives
Adaptec 133 RAID card
Dual 3COM NICs
SCSI CDROM & Tape Drive
My idea is to hang the CDROM and Tape Drive off the O/B SCSI and set the
disks up as RAID5 with one big partition. Is this the best way to go for
performance? Any ideas appreciated ...
