now that the kb is online I found an article that says that 8.2 had this exact problem and that 8.21 resolved it.

This  is often because the SQL authorization can be performed from the
interactive  user's  context,  but  not  from the service context. For
example, are you using a trusted connection such as that offered by MS
SQL?
