Is anyone aware of a way to read the spool files 'translated'-eg not
just with a text  editor but display thier content as an email client
does - converting base64, html, etc. Maybe a way to launch an email
client with a command line?

Just  associate  .SMD  with  your  mail client. They'll open just like
RFC822 .EML files.
