Maybe this is too obvious, but I have never seen anyone mention it. In network connections, for each adapter, click properties. On the General tab, click the Configure button for the adapter. Click the Power Management tab. Ensure that "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" is not checked.

I already replied to this message but after reading responses by other members it came to my mind, that our email server is a plain vanilla Athlon 1.4 GHz personal computer converted into an email server with a 3Com 905 Tx NIC card.
So, tomorrow morning I will check this power setting and let you all know about it. I will not change any setting until the networking of this server goes down again, it's been up since Friday morning.
