From the IMail documentation:
A*.??? A data file undergoing connection filtering and SPF testing; deleted when message is delivered.

It will rename to D when completed. Sounds like your system is not completing the Anti-Virus or connection filtering processes. You could try turning AV off for a while... Is your subscription up to date? You might want to disable the Connection filtering and SPF tests (are DNS black lists in use? turn that off, too). If you can isolate which test is causing the trouble, then it may need some help...

If the A & D pairs are there, then those are normal messages in process. If only a D and no A/T/Q, then it is a double bounce (not delivered and could not be returned). See:

"A" files?
Which version are U running?
About old files, if there're Q files, queue manager must process them (pair of files: Q? + D?)

Subject: [IMail Forum] files in spool

Hello,

I can see a lot of files in the spool directory, most of them starting
with A and ending with .SMD extensions. Also I can see a lot of files of
previous days which seem to be genuine emails but lying around in the
spool directory. I want to know what are these files. Are this the
undelivered emails? How can I find out?

Regards
Nitesh N
