Grant, you need to setup host headers on each of the webservers.
Go to the properties, select advanced and edit the first entry that
lists an IP and put www.domain.com. Then add another entry with the
same ip and port and put domain.com. For FTP you'll want to create
a virtual directory in the ftp server for that IP and use the
user's username as the name of the virtual directory and point
it to his home directory (d:\users\theuser) and make sure you
give it read/write access. That way when a user ftp's to ftp.domain.com
they are dropped into their home directory and don't really know
you've got them on a shared system (remember to tell them anonymous
FTP is not allowed).
For imail, just create a new virtual server. . . .
Now, I'm moving away from a shared IP system as it's been brought
to my attention that search engines are starting to frown on this.
It seems with some of the engines if one of your hosted accounts spams
the searchengine (submits too frequently) the whole IP could be blocked.
Others are not allowing this as many companies are now registering multiple
domains in a hope of monopolizing the search engines.
I have around 40 domains right now I think all sharing a single IP. Yes,
I think it's too much and that's another reason I'm splitting them up.
On a performance note, I had 120+ accounts on a single box running web, ftp,
mail, stats, dns with just a p2 400 and 128MB of ram before I ran out of
RAM. I dropped another 128 in it and it's holding about 240 virtual servers
right now but it's starting to limp pretty bad in my opinion so we're moving out
to larger machines and windows2000.
As for deciding who needs their own IP, if they need their own SSL server,
they need their own IP. If they need anonymous FTP, they need their own IP.
If they need the ldap server in imail, they need their own IP. otherwise,
no problems. The ssl server has been the big kicker for us on determining
whether shared IP or not.
If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to email me off list.
Regards
Jess
ps make sure you delete the ssl listing under the properties or you'll get
a bunch of error messages in your eventlogs.
