Hmmm
The mail.esc8.net IS the IMail server. It is the machine I described in my
initial message, i.e., IMail 5.06 server running on NT4sp4. The 208.48.19.32
is the external IP in the PIX firewall that allows access to the mail
server.
Let me pose a hypothetical situation. nb.esc8.net is the virtual hostname
for that mail domain. What would happen if someone assigned the hostname
'nb' to a real machine in the esc8.net domain? Would that cause the
conflict?

I see these DNS records:
nb.esc8.net.
alias = mail.esc8.net.
mail.esc8.net.
208.48.19.32
This appears not to be an IMail server. I bet that the "undeliverable by
the postmaster" messages are from this other mail server.
