Sorry to be jumping back to this late but....
My understanding is the when using an NAS, particularly
when using multiple (Bonded) 100 Mb NICs or a Gb link, the access
time will improve significantly. The NAS disk subsystem is
much faster by default and when it is given a large enough pipe
to the application server it screams.
This can also be accomplished through fiber channel.
Were you accessing a shared drive on another NT machine?
An NAS OS is tuned to perform this function where NT
certainly is not.
