I had what I thought was a mail loop earlier. I found out that we sent out
a couple hundred emails for a client, we used a custom ASP app and MS SMTP
service to send the e-mails. We've done this many times before, so I know
everything works ok.
It would appear that MS SMTP service freaked out and sent each message to
each recipient like 1000's of times. Once the recipient's mailbox filled,
it started bouncing messages, it just so happens that the from address on
the original mailing was a valid email address on my Imail server. So our
SMTP (Microsoft) service is still sending messages, the messages are being
bounced, and my Imail server receives thousands of bounced messages, which
is why I thought it was a mail loop to begin with.
I have resolved the issue by stopping MS SMTP service and deleting all
messages in it's queue. The odd thing is, there is no record of misbehavior
in the smtp logs. My boss wants an explanation, which I gave him what I'm
telling you, but he also wants to know how we are going to keep this from
happening again.
Has anyone ever seen anything like this? Any advice would be greatly
appreciated.
