The 'announcement' is in the ehlo response, as you showed, and that is the
value for the domain, 'Single Message Max Size'. The sending server should
use this as a guide for sending its message (assuming it too, supports
SIZE).
I've not yet tried using a telnet session to go beyond this (watching the
response change when I change that 'Size' setting), so I really do not know
at this time, how IMail handles a message of a larger size for a particular
user (or even it that is possible). But since there is no setting in a user
in IMail for this, I'd have to say IMail uses the domains value at all
times.
If I remember the RFC correctly, Size mustbe specified in the 'Mail From:'
line, so I'm guessing IMail sees that value and compares it to that for the
domain, and accepts or rejects based on the results. It is also possible
that it waits for the 'RCPT To:' line, saying, yea or nay, in the 'RCPT To:'
response. Yep, that is what the RFC seems to indicate, is a valid server
operation and response (accepting or rejecting the message in the RCPT To:
response)!
I'd still have to try all this to state emphatically that 'this is the way
IMail works', but the RFC does allow for these conditions. As far as I know,
IMail is fully compliant with RFC 1870.
