If you run IMail on Windows 2000, you have two options:
[1] Use the IMail database, or an external database. In this case, you don't have to
do anything regarding the Active Directory (it can be installed or not, on any
machines, it doesn't matter).
[2] Use the "NT" database. If you do this, you need to have the Active Directory
installed *on the IMail server*. If you do not have the Active Directory installed,
or it is installed on another server, IMail will only see the local accounts. By
installing the Active Directory on the IMail server, IMail can then see the accounts.

Why would IMAIL need to run on an AD server?
Doesn't here and works fine. Infact all 1000 virtuals works fine. And yes
some of them talk to the Win2000 Auth database for their name/passwords
and some talk to DSN's and some heaven forbid use the registry.
