I have this same problem with my cable modem provider.  I circumvent (sp?)
it by setting up the cable email account in OutlookExpress, but turn off the
"include this account when receiving mail" under the general properties for
that profile.

I set up my other business profiles (all using my mail server for smtp) and
all works well.  Apparently, their concern of me being a customer of theirs
is satisfied by having the account setup in the client.
