Just forget about MS Access due to it being a desktop file manager whose
locking scheme prevents it from supporting, say, 10+ simultaneous accesses
with acceptable performance. It can handle a database of your size, but not
25 or 50 simultaneous accesses.
The other two are true database row-level record managers with better
locking schemes, but MySQL's speed is due to its low level of SQL features,
which is ok is you have simple apps and database schemas. I think MS SQL 7
Internet connector license is at $5000 per CPU now, but MS's
trial-balloon-license-of-the-week is subject to change, either way. At
least MS has not, yet, been able to remove all other database products from
the market. Since you're in the open source area, Postgres is worth a
look, I think, as a more complete SQL implementation than MySQL, although I
guess MySQL would be enough for Imail's simple requirements.
5K - 1O K users for Imail and records in a database really isn't very big.
