Sounds like you need to wipe NT and start over. Happens to everybody.

yes, xBSD or Linux with BIND8, which must know from BSDi.
MS DNS is at level BIND4 technology, about 5 years back. Your MS DNS
zone files are RFC compatible so they can be copied and serve for BIND8.
