but aaaa, aaab, aaac aren't even plausible, are totally improbable names.

A dictionary attack has a dictioniary of plausible stem names + 
variations.  I think it's a DoS attack, sending him mail with 
mathematically generated "RCPT TO:" to tie up his SMTPD server.
