My clients are receiving mail just fine all day long. They just have a
problem sending mail from time to time.

Maybe you've got some killer files in the queue.
SMTPD is always running. When it wakes up to do a queue run, and
finds queued msqs to send, it spawns SMTP- processes to send them,
local or remote. If the queue has got some junk msg(s) in it, this
could the pb. SMTPD generates a couple dozen SMTPD processes and
they all are timing out in some weird state.
Can you see that the SMTPD function of receiving incoming mail is
working fine, at least up to the point of accepting and queueing the
msg? Are there no "ldeliver" or "rdeliver" lines? ldeliver occurs
when SMTPD spawns a SMTP- to deliver queued mail either locally or remotely.
To try to get some progress, just move all queued d*.txt, t*.txt, and
q*.txt files to imail\spool\save. And then reboot to clear memory.
With the queue empty of any killer msgs, everything should be ok
again. Then you've got to copy back the \save files in groups, force
a queue run (queue tab), and see if the pb comes back.
