Sounds like they are playing games with you. Perhaps your legal
department should review the original contract and see who actually owns the
domain name. We do hosting and in some cases this has helped to clarify the
rights to the domain name. Occasionally this has become an issue for
domains that are being transferred. As a matter of course we register all
domains in the site owners name. Their site, their name (once we are paid)
and they can take it where they will, when ever they wish. No muss, no
fuss, no lawyers.
I have heard that some other services do this differently but will not
comment further on that.
