Could be just a malicious mail bomb, intention being to bring your 
server to its knees while rejecting all those mails, if they are at 
high enough rate.

There is no defense, since you can't stop them sending / D o S ing you.

The best is to have an upstream box like a packet filtering router 
and block at level of tcp/ip source address, or an IMGate and block 
at smtp level on headers or contents. This will definitely slow down 
imgate, but that' what it's there for, to take catch the flak for 
imail so your customers can get to your Imail services.
