Kevin thank you.   Here is what I have found so far from MS support site on
WinME:

- You will not be able to see embedded objects or images sent
  from people using Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Exchange, or
  Windows Messaging. File attachments work fine, however.

I assume that refers to AOL as well.  I also noted that this was referring
to Outlook express (all versions).  SO, I don't know what the deal is with
Outlook 2000 and WinME or winXXX for that matter.

I know they have this for IE, but outlook?  Have you tried the windows
update page?  By AOL images, I assume you mean .art format?
