IIRC, some AOL settings block SMTP to outside servers, some don't. Have
him use AOL's mail server for outgoing, and yours for incoming. General
rule for dial-in customers everywhere. If it works for him sometimes,
that's 'cause AOL hasn't fixed all their lines, yet. When they do, it
won't work for him any time at all ;-)
