Greg,

The update may or may not fix the application error. There are a couple of
possibilities for the cause of smtp32.exe app errors, one being aliases of
the list type with incomplete or more than 50, email addresses. If the list
contains other aliases that cause the total number of recipients to get
above 50 addresses, that too, can cause the error. A bad message file, is
another possible cause. Basically I'm saying, the problem may still exist
even after the upgrade, unless you check and fix these (and other) possible
sources.

I don't think you need a better machine, at least not without looking more
carefully, at the  utilization of the current configuration. So check
CPU/RAM/DISK usage and update those parts that have the least free
resources.
