I had a lovely error waiting for me on my mail server this morning:
Initialization of the dynamic link library C:\WINNT\system32\COMCTL32.dll
failed. The process is terminating abnormally.
Pressing OK several times I reduced my smtp32 process down to 17, down from
160. Now I'm waiting for the last 15 e-mails to finish the 20 bounce hop.
Thinking quickly, I went to my e-mail and searched through my Imail list to
see if someone else had run across this problem before. I found several
instances of the problem but no hard answers. Then I went to the Imail KB
to do a little more research.
http://support.ipswitch.com/kb/IM-20000316-DM01.htm Nice, but not much
help. Nothing else in the KB seems to apply.
Time to look in the Microsoft KB;
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/psdk/shellcc/shell/Versions.htm Looking
at my version of comctl32.dll I find that I am running 4.72.3612.1702.
Standard fare for a machine running IE 4.01 sp2. Looking on my workstation
I find that it is running version 5.81, which technically, according to
Microsoft, should not be running on Windows NT 4.0. I'm assuming that my
upgraded browser (IE5.5) installed it.
The only way to get an upgraded dll is to... Download the Latest Version
Internet Explorer.
