I know that when we sent messages to upwards of 1,000 people on a list, it
takes several hours for all people to get the message. If there are even
300 people on this list and the volume that it gets, the list server could
be having trouble keeping up.
It could also have been down for a certain amount of time.
I have dealt with a decent number of list servers and IPSwitch's mail server
isn't one ready for prime-time. I have ever heard some say it's their
weakest point.
One of the most efficient mail servers I've ever seen is LetterRip Pro by
Fog City Software www.fogcity.com. Unfortunately, this is a mac-only
product.
What it does when sending mail it groups all e-mails that are headed to the
same provider (say aol) and then sends one e-mail with all the recipients to
that provider. So e-mail is sent much more quickly. It's SMTP engine is
awesome. I know a site that hosts 25+ lists with a total of 25,000 members.
Some of the lists get 200+ e-mails a day and they're all delivered within
minutes. I've never seen a slowdown or delay.
