>I will be hooking up a imail account to an exchange server.

I'm already lost.

too many pronouns with ambiguous antecedents. :))

>I am unclear on how they can send mail from exchange out to the intertnet.

At least, you need to activate Exchange's "Internet connector", which
is SMTP over tcp/ip.

Who are "them", Imail users or Exchange users?

>Method one

on which machine

from where to where?

>3. Let the exchange server set up a pop account to retrieve the pop mail in
>the [EMAIL PROTECTED] account.

So you want Imail to be the gateway/relay for Exchange? There's no
need to set up a catchall account in Imail for the exchange accounts'
msgs. Imail will receive exchange-bound mail and store it in Imail's
queue, not in a mailbox. The exchange domain's MX needs to point at
Imail hostname.

>4. Exchange will magically route the mail to the correct exchage recipient.

well, Exchange is so complex it's magic (why does MS think 5000
dialog tabs is simplifying? ) that anything works, but mailbox
delivery seems ok. :)))

I think the above technique needs some kind of Exchange macro that
you get from MS to POP the mail from Imail's "mailbag" account.

>Method Two
>1. In dns set up an "A" record like mail.domain.com and point it to their ip
>for the exchange box.

yes, assuming domain.com is the Exchange domain. But if you don't
impede Internet from sending mail directly to Exch, don't define an A record.

>2 In dns, set the higher priority mx record to the imail mail server.

yes

>3. In dns set the secondary mx record to mail.domain.com exchange server.

not necessary, esp if you want to "hide" exchange from DNS MX
records. And really useless if the Exchange box is on a dial-up line.

>3. Add the ip address and mail.domain.com to the hosts file on the imail
>server.

yes, but for both mail.domain.com and domain.com.

>4. Add the ip address to the "relay for ip addresses" setting in imail.

yes

>4. Remove their virtual host from the imail server.

If it was in there, yes. otherwise the exchange domain's mail get
delivered to Imail boxes.

>The question i have, is..how do they SEND mail from exchange out to the
>internet?

Over the Exchange "Internet connector"

>Do they need to define their internet mail connector to connect to the imail
>server in some way?

If Imail is to act as the outbound gateway to internet for them, then
Exchange Internet connector can be set to forward all outbound to
Imail's ip or hostname and you need to set up Imail as backup
MX/relay for the exchange machine's hostname and ip address. Or
Exchange can do its own deliveries to Internet. your call.

> Is there something I need to do on my side?

Assuming your side is Imail, no, it sounds like you've got it covered.
