who knows? If you isolate one, then look at it with a text editor
(the msg files are ascii txt)

No, they get sent to Imail SMTPD server, which doesn't seem to be
bothered by the garbage format, but when the msg is picked up by an
SMTP client, it dies. anyway, that's the theory, but we've seen the
situation several times in this mailing list.
