a DNS client/resolver ask a DNS for the PTR record of an ip address.

If you�re talking about a mail server doing a reverse lookup, it looks up
the PTR for the ip of the mail client that called that mail server.

domain.com MX 10 mail.domain.com
mail.domain.com MX 10 mail.domain.com
each MX record tells where to send the mail for each @recipientdomain on
the left side.
