I am also using the setup Dan describes, though I am going at it slightly different.
I am using WebShield in a pure relay mode.
Internet Email ---> WebShield ---> Imail SMTP(IN)
Imail SMTP(OUT) ---> WebShield ---> Internet
Both programs are running on the same box so I have only the loopback and local
machine address in the ALLOW ADDRESSES dialog.
All of my intranet clients are using an alternative SMTPOUT port on IMAIL (1025 for
example) or are using Web Mail and I force Imail to deliver to Webshield by
specifiying delivery to the localip:25.
If your firewall allows it, your clients needing SMTP send from the internet, could
configure their mail client to this alternative port and use SMTP AUTH.
Two disadvantages to this method.
1) If there is a virus in the email it will be delivered to Imail, placed in the logs
and then forwarded to WebShield. (Webshield will catch it and deliver the VIRUS FOUND
message back to Imail for distribution). I am also running Real-time file protection
on the server so the file would be caught if opened on the server while reading
message logs.
2) If there is a virus in the email and the recipient is in a domain hosted by Imail,
it will be delivered and never scanned (desktop scanner will have to catch).
If anybody can tell me that I have a glaring methodology error staring me in the face,
please do.
