Have subscribed to this list for a few years now, but do not remember if
this question was ever asked/answered in detail. In any event, here is my
situation.
I have several servers co-located at the facilities of a local ISP, one of
which happens to be my IMail server. Due to my state's habit of having
rolling blackouts, I decided to set up a dedicated business DSL connection
at my home to act as a "backup" for my primary servers.
I now have a separate box on the home DSL connection running IMail. I wish
to have it spool mail in the event that my primary IMail server goes down.
When reading the documentation on this though, I was unclear on a few
issues. Here are my questions.
1. In the HOSTS file on the backup machine, IPswitch gives an example
listing of
123.123.123.123 thedomain_name.com
Shouldn't all addresses in this file be FQDN's?
2. I have numerous domains pointing to a single IP address on my IMail
server, since they are working as virtual domains. They are all named
mail.domainname.com, or something similar, in DNS and MX records. Obviously
there is only 1 RDNS entry. Can I list all of those entries in my HOSTS file
like:
208.25.165.171 mail.domain1.com
208.25.165.171 mail.domain2.com
208.25.165.171 mail.domain3.com
If not, how do I assure that IMail finds the right IP address, and does not
get caught in a mail loop?
FYI, I also have a backup DNS server at my home location, which is the third
one listed in my preferences with Network Solutions. My two main DNS servers
are at the ISP, so all lookups would go to the backup DNS server at home in
the event that service at the main location fails.
I have done everything else "by the book", as far as I can tell. Would
greatly appreciate any help or suggestions. Thanks!
