I have been seeing the SMTP Auth posts on the list, and frankly not paying
too much attention to them, as it is working for us. However, I just read a
few, and I need to make sure I understand the problem with I-mail. I
currently administer two I-mail servers, one is a dingle domain, with the
external database option. I like it. I really like it. We use SMTP auth
for the normal reasons, we have clients from multiple networks, and we don't
want to relay for Spammers. The other server I administer has about 110
virtual domains using the I-mail database (Registry) option. We use SMTP
Auth here for the same reasons. I am preparing to migrate the 110 domain
server to Win2K and was planning to suck the users out of the registry and
set up the external database configuration. Am I to understand that if I do
this, and I have a multiple virtual domain server configuration set up with
an external database that SMTP auth will not work and I will be unable to
block spammers without blocking my users?

1. network security is important against attacks. block all access to the
Imail machine except for the smtp, pop, imap, https, and http ports.

2. use isplcean.exe to keep your imail/spool directory with a minimum
number of files

3. put your spool and mailbox directories on different drives.

4. backup your imail registry frequently

5. monitor this mailing list

6. use "relay for addresses" and SMTP AUTH to prevent relay hijacking.

7. monitor your imail SMTP log file for anomalies

8. evaulate the add-on products Declude, IMGate, and Killer Web Mail
templates on the ipswitch site.
