If you were connecting to one of earthlink.net's mail servers, the logs would indicate several problems on their end. However, what you are really dealing here is with the IMail bug (which appears to be fixed in 7.04) where it would send to the A record if it couldn't reach the MX records. Specifically, 207.217.120.206 is listed as an A record for earthlink.net, but isn't listed as one of the MX records for earthlink.net.
