FYI, you can use a program like Stunnel ( http://www.stunnel.org ) to have 
an "SSL tunnel" that accomplishes this.  The program would answer on the 
SSL port for POP or IMAP, but route the transactions to the standard 
POP/IMAP port.  It's a neat little trick that can let you offer secure 
POP3, IMAP, SMTP, whatever you want.
