I just did this last week to get Imail to log to FreeBSD for so IMGate can 
do popb-before-smtp.

does sockstat show syslogd on the well-know syslog port?

iptraf or trafshow to see the stuff arriving?

Imail's syslog support isn't very sophisticated (no facility.level stuff) 
so syslog-ng was the only way we could get the syslog filtering and routing 
we needed.
