Alan,

An A record is used for Hosts,  such as www, or any other entry you may see
before the domain.com.

MX Records are mail exchange records.  They tell other servers where your
email for that particular domain.com goes to.  Multiple MX records would
send mail to the Highest Preference (lowest number) first and if not
available
it would try the second (if you have a second) and third and so forth.
