One resolves suspicions of virus infection by using a virus scanner. Another way to remove suspicion is to wipe the drives and then reinstall the operating system and applications from "known good" installation media, i.e., the original disks, CD-ROMs, or tapes. Then restore the data from a "known good" backup, if one is available. There are no other generic answers. If any viruses are found by a scanner, and the option to reinstall everything and restore good backups is not useful, one can remove viruses using virus removal tools. Most virus scanners are sold with virus removal tools. But before you do anything radical, before we assume the worst, please do a little background work. Do you have reason to think that something, like running an unknown program or visiting a hostile Internet site, might have put this computer at risk for a virus? Was there unauthorized access made to this computer, such as via a poorly secured web server or surplus services? Have you searched for a description of a virus that exhibits the behavior you've noticed? There are certain shares that cannot (and should not) be removed, and there are normal software packages that might require and maintain other shares.
