just following on from this.....

a lot of users using outlook express 5.5 and 6.0 have the
'STORE SPECIAL FOLDERS ON IMAP SERVER' turned on.
this causes the messages in SENT and DRAFT folder
to be saved on the server.

is IMAP any more or less efficient depending on if its downloading
or UPLOADING ?

still curious.....

yes

the usual suspects:

defrag the mailbox partition

Search-and-Destroy gigabyte mailboxes

clean out and defrag the spool partition

re-org or re-build or whatever the imap database ( backup first )
